2018 Business Survey Provides Snapshot of Burien Economy

In October 2018, the City of Burien sought feedback from the Burien business community through a survey, three focus groups, and five one-on-one interviews.

The goal was to provide an economic snapshot of Burien’s business community and collect feedback and opinions on local issues, generating baseline data and information to improve the local business climate and help businesses grow and prosper in our community.

Methodology

The City received 251 responses to the questionnaire mailed to all Burien businesses. The questionnaire was limited to one double-sided page in order to ensure a good response rate. All 1,730 businesses with City of Burien business licenses were mailed questionnaires in three languages: English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Online access was also provided in all three languages. 251 businesses responded to the questionnaire, a 14.5% response rate. In conjunction with the questionnaire, the City contracted with third-party facilitators to conduct three business focus groups in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. The goal of the business focus groups was to provide a forum for business owners to discuss opportunities and challenges of doing business in Burien, providing context to the written survey, and reveal ways to improve the local business climate. The questionnaire also asked a question in anticipation of the Burien City Council’s decision to pass an ordinance banning single-use plastics.
