Applications are now being accepted for the City of Burien’s annual Neighborhood Grants Program. The purpose of the program is to encourage projects that foster community and create community improvements in an equitable manner. The program will provide up to $5,000 per project. Community members must match the grant with an equally valued amount of local resources that could include volunteer labor, donated materials, donated professional services, or funds.
Projects that qualify for a neighborhood matching grant can improve the local community and be completed by the end of the funding year. They must be within the Burien city limits and meet other specific criteria.
All projects will be required to have a Neighborhood Project Coordinator to be the liaison between the City and the neighborhood during project development and implementation..
Project applications will be evaluated on the quality of the project, neighborhood participation and benefit, visibility, and benefit to the public. Organizations and individuals who are not yet funded by the City of Burien will be given priority in consideration to provide equitable access to funding.
Last year’s program supported the creation and celebration of four outstanding projects. It funded a mural project in the downtown area, a solar festival that provided education on renewable energy and sustainable communities, and the construction of a bee-keeping enclosure, also known as an apiary. The program also supported a grassroots Luna New Year celebration.
