For the past two years, the community has been asked to help Shape Your City to help plan for Burien’s future. That work has already produced an updated Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan and a new Economic Development Action Plan.
Following the final public hearing held on October 7, the Burien City Council is expected to take action on the Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan at their meeting on October 28 when it will be proposed for adoption.
The adoption of the Comprehensive Plan will also adopt the new Ambaum and Boulevard Park Community Plan, updates to the Greater Downtown Urban Center Plan, and the Transportation Master Plan.
The Comprehensive Plan is the blueprint for how the City will plan for growth over the next 20 years including goals, policies, and implementing actions in chapters focused on:
- Equity,
- Land Use,
- Transportation,
- Housing,
- Human Services,
- Economic Development,
- Community Health & Wellbeing,
- Sustainability & Natural Environment,
- Climate Change & Resiliency,
- Parks, Recreation, and Open Space,
- Utilities, and
- Capital Facilities.
Thank you to all those who have engaged with the Shape Your City campaign, provided feedback in person or online, and attended open houses and public meetings. We wouldn’t be here today without the guidance of the Burien Planning Commission, community and advisory groups, and members of the public.
The adoption of the Comprehensive Plan isn’t the end, but just the beginning of the next stage: implementation! We’re kicking off implementation by wasting no time, for the remainder of 2024 the City Council will also consider the following for approval:
- Amending Multifamily Tax Exemption (MFTE) Program and Expansion of Residential Target Areas
- Zoning and Design Standards Code Amendments
- Planned Action Ordinances for Ambaum and Boulevard Park Community Plan
- Planned Action Ordinance for Greater Downtown Urban Center
Along with that work, we will also focus on updating additional portions of the Comprehensive Plan, including around Emergency Shelters, Transitional Housing, Emergency Housing, and Permanent Supportive (STEP) Housing, before the end of the year.
