Community Collaboration Creates a Healthy Urban Forest at Hazel Valley Park

The City of Burien in partnership with EarthCorps, a restoration nonprofit, and the Hazel Valley Park community installed 182 plants in the park on Saturday, November 5.

This planting is the latest in a year-long project at the park. What started off as a patch of blackberry and ivy impacting the health of a patch of trees has been transformed into a healthy urban forest with pollinators and edible plants.

This work included youth crews brush-cutting blackberry shoots and working with volunteers to dig out the roots, then returning in the summer to hand-remove poison hemlock.

This project is a part of ongoing work by the city to engage the neighborhood in decisions around restoration efforts and park projects.
