The Critical Area Ordinance is a collection of regulations that protect naturally sensitive areas and the public from hazards such as floods and landslides.
The City has developed a series of handouts to help community members better understand each type of critical area and how they are currently protected. These handouts can be downloaded as digital files below in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Amharic. Print copies are available on request at Burien City Hall.
RCW 36.70A.030(11) defines five types of critical areas, which are required to be protected by local development regulations. The five critical areas are as follows:

You can stay updated and provide feedback on the Critical Area Ordinance project in many ways:
1. Visit our Community Hub project page for the most up to date information.
2. Email a planner with your questions: planning@burienwa.gov.
3. Attend an open house from 3:30 – 5 p.m. prior to the 5:30 p.m. public hearing at Planning Commission on September 24.
4. Talk to City staff at different community events like the Burien Farmers Market.
5. Follow progress and provide feedback by attending upcoming Planning Commission meetings on July 23, September 10, September 24, and City Council meetings on October 20, and November 14. Agendas and packet materials will be posted ahead of each meeting.
